"My Daughter and our experience of 111"

About: Inverclyde Royal Hospital / Accident & Emergency NHS 24 / NHS 24 (111 service)

(as a parent/guardian),

My daughter hurt her finger playing basketball the other day at school, on returning from school I noticed her finger was very swollen and painful.

As we don’t have a minor injuries unit in Inverclyde I decided to take her to Inverclyde Royal Hospital A&E department. On arrival the department was obviously busy so I asked how long the wait was and it was estimated at 6 hours we decided to leave and call 111.The NHS 24 member of staff was so helpful and so was the clinician, they thought it may be fractured and arranged a video call with a nurse practitioner within 30 minutes.

The nurse practitioner was lovely and put my daughter and I at ease. She also thought it was fractured and arranged a time for us to visit A&E the following morning for an Xray.

Fortunately it is not broken and she has returned to school. I just wanted to highlight this fantastic service as I did not think it was possible due to the lack of minor injuries unit. The staff were so professional and helpful I feel they and the service deserve recognition. (also saved us a 6 hour+ wait in a&E)

Thank you Sara for taking the time to write this post on Care Opinion. I am glad you were able to access the care your daughter required and I hope she is recovering well.

If you wish to provide me with further information related to your contact with 111, we will be able to provide your feedback to the staff involved in the call regarding her daughter's care. You can contact me by email at Patient.Experience@nhs24.scot.nhs.uk

Thanks again and best wishes to you and your daughter.

Kind regards

Dawn

Dear Sara

Thank you for sharing your experience on Care Opinion. Our Minor Injuries Unit is based at Vale of Leven Hospital unfortunately but thankfully your daughter was reviewed promptly by utilising the 111 service and I trust she is now recovering well.

Getting this message out there will certainly reduce our waiting times in our busy ED departments so thank you for highlighting this.

Kind regards

Alison McKinnon
