"Lack of pain management"

About: Crosshouse Hospital / Pain Management Service

(as the patient),

I phoned the out of hours service last night as I was in a great deal of pain and the pain relief I am prescribed  had run out. I was given an appointment for 9:30, was seen at 9:45 and taken to a short stay ward and told to wait when I asked when I'd be getting pain relief.

I was moved to another area / ward where they carried out assessments and had proper beds, by this time I was in agony. I needed a morphine injection and a sleeping pill to  help me cope.

At 11:00 I was sent to the relief lounge, I was told I would be given morphine there. I waited over an hour, as the pain become more unbearable I pressed a help button. As the lounge was not on the main ward it took the staff a while to work out where the call for help was coming from. I was told the doctor would be there to see me in about 10 minutes when they had finished seeing another patient, it took another 40 minutes before the doctor arrived and I was given the pain relief I needed.

The pain management team itself provides an excellent service and I attend this clinic regularly. However, trying to get someone, out side the pain management team, to understand the debilitating effect of the intense pain someone can suffer and to have a process in place where this can be treated quickly seems to be difficult.

I respond initially to most of the posts and ensure they are passed to the appropriate team whether they are compliments, observations or grumbles. It is important to make sure all issues are addressed and I try to encourage that to happen for all the posts as required.

Dear januaryty74,

I am so sorry, I can only imagine how much pain you were in and how difficult it is to cope with when it is that bad.

I wonder if you could email me some details so we can look into this to find out what happened on this occasion. If you would like us to do this, I will need your name, date of birth or CHI number and what ward you were in. My email address is eunice.goodwin@aapct.scot.nhs.uk.

I hope your pain is well controlled now and you can stock up with your prescription to avoid being caught out over the Christmas holidays.

In the meantime, I will pass this on to management for our reflection.

Best wishes,

Eunice

Dear Eunice

Thank you for your feed back, but yes I was in a lot of from 9.30 when I went to out of ours then admitted by 10.20 another 20min before getting a bed. By time it was 10.45pm I waited in more pain so at 3.15am I pressed the button and was told the doctor would be 10mins but actually arrived 45min later by this time I was crying with the pain, so I asked if they could tell the time. They said yes but they were very busy. It was past 4am before I was administered my Morphine and a sleeper. I was told I was uneasy through the night.

By 8am I was awake and asked for more pain meds with my breakfast I received my breakfast but no pain meds. After 10am I was given another 5mg and I asked for 15 to 20 mg I was then asked to collect my things and follow a staff member to thr discharge lounge I pressed the button again half an hour later the nurse came back with my correct amount by this time had managed to contact my man in his lunch break he cam and picked me up but had no time for his lunch

Thankyou for reading this
