"Child admission to A& E"

About: Royal Blackburn Hospital / Accident and emergency

Was triaged on arrival by pleasant nurse

Informed we would have a six hour wait even though only 2 more children awaiting treatment.

Told there were no doctors on the children's side as they had been sent next door as their doctors have rang in sick. Waited 4 hours in a communal waiting room that was strewn with toys all over floor, water and cups spilled on tables, chairs and floor and ?? a pair of black tights?? on table.

Very hard plastic seats that offered no comfort for the 4 hour wait with a child who wanted to sleep. Both staff sat chatting at nurses station about upcoming holiday until end of their shift. Never cleaned any of items away and said they would get domestics to come and clean up.

At shift change new nurses very nice, came and cleaned the room and tidied toys and spills. Apologised for wait and said new doctor would be on shift at 8am to review children

Nurse practitioner came and was lovely and saw my son quickly and offered good advice about condition

Just feel the waiting area and comfort of this for prolonged waiting time let this unit down

Thank you for your feedback regarding your child's admission to the Emergency Department at Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital and thank-you for taking the time to provide this.

It is lovely to hear that you found the care you received from the staff to be pleasant.

However, I am sorry for the length of time you had to wait before your child was treated and that the waiting area was not cleaned or items cleared away in a timely manner and will ensure that your comments are fed back to the senior staff for the Emergency Department and also Patient Services.

If you would like us to look into this further for you please could you contact us to provide more information by emailing the Patient Experience Team at patientexperience@elht.nhs.uk

If you prefer you can discuss further any concerns you may have about our services with our East Lancashire Hospitals Trust Customer Relations team on 01254 733700 or by emailing complaints@elht.nhs.uk who can advise you of your options in raising these concerns further.

Kind regards

Sarah Ridehalgh
