"Care of the elderly"

About: The Dekeyser Group Practice

My mother has been a patient of the practice for over twenty seven years. She in now in her hundredth year and lives independently even though she is registered blind and has had several fractures to her spine. My sister and I are her carers and only ask for a repeat prescription as required. Just recently she was due for her annual review. My sister booked an appointment but this was cancelled and she only received a two minute call from one of the doctors. She also requires her annual flu injection but this also was cancelled and we were asked if she could go to the surgery for it!!

I would like to know when is the cut off point when you stop caring for the elderly? Surely a yearly visit is not much to ask to give her reassurance she is doing well and the family unit is still okay with her situation?

A cancerous growth was found by the doctor last year but she has never had a follow up from anyone from he practice.

We as a family appreciate that operations etc are probably out of the question but do we just discard her because she is going on "100"

We as a family would like to hear your views as if she was a member of your family wouldn't you be very disappointed that a home visit was refused?

Its is very disappointing to read such comments that due to appointments having had to be cancelled this week as two of the Nursing Team called in sick.

Due to these unplanned circumstances these appointment were cancelled and will be rearranged.

As a Practice I believe we offer a very caring and empathic service to all patients and I am sure that the receptionist wasn't aware that mum was housebound and was trying to look at an alternative there an then for her to have a flu injection as quickly as possible.

I agree that a yearly visit isn't too much to ask from any Primary Care provider and we would have managed this if our Nurses hadn't called in sick.

With regards to the follow up from a GP if your mum is being seen by a hospital consultant in a specific clinic then as a Practice we wouldn't also need to be involved in her treatment plan.

If however you may be saying that no action has been taken at all then please contact the surgery for this to be investigated.

I will pass your comments on to the Partners here at the Practice and ask the lead Nurse to double check all cancelled home visits have been rearranged

Please accept my sincere apologies for any upset we may have caused you and your family due to these unforeseen circumstances
