"Second stay at the Wellesley"

About: Spire Wellesley Hospital

Following a hip replacement in October 2015, of which I found all aspects of the surgery, care and stay at the Wellesley faultless, I chose to have a knee replacement also at the Wellesley.

As expected, the surgery, care and accommodation was spot on.

However, there is one point that I would like to make known as it has left me very disappointed in the hospital.

Upon discharge, I was given medication to take home with me.

I asked the discharge nurse if the take home medication would be covered by my insurance, to which I was told "Yes it is.

Only if you were an outpatient would you be required to pay for the medication.

At this point you are still an inpatient." I accepted this as this was also the case with my previous surgery.

However, not long after returning home I received an invoice for £140 for the medication I was discharged with.

I queried this with both the hospital and the insurance company and was ultimately told that I was misinformed when discharged and I have to pay.

I reluctantly paid the invoice (having to use a credit card) and during the call I asked to be sent an email address to raise a formal complaint.

The person I spoke to assured me they would email the details to raise a complaint.

As yet I have still not received this, which is why I am making it known here.

Although this was an issue for me and caused a lot of unnecessary stress whilst recovering from major surgery, I cannot take anything away from the superb care I received whilst at the Wellesley.

Hi, we are sorry for the issues getting you the right information and we have only just been made aware of this.

You may of course submit a formal complaint either by writing to the Hospital Director or Matron at the Wellesley or by emailing to info@spirewellesley.com However, we’d appreciate the opportunity to speak with you first in order for us to investigate further and to do so, we would need more details than are published on the NHS Choices website. Perhaps you’d kindly call us on 01702 447 903?

Many thanks,

Spire Wellesley Hospital
