Having attended the contraception clinic in Huddersfield (ICaSH) for the first time last year I was impressed with the quality of care I received. When I attended for my 'procedure' I was very anxious and overwhelmed and felt led and pressured in the type of IUD I was to have, despite feeling led the dr and assistant were very caring.
I returned recently unhappy with my IUD for a number of reasons but understood the importance of keeping it in for over 12months (financial reasons for the NHS) but felt unable to do this and explained I'd originally attended for a different one but felt swayed to have the one I was unhappy with.
When I returned (for the reasons mentioned above) I used the drop in service and was waiting over an hour which I found very frustrating as there were no indications on time frames and when I enquired with reception it wasn't well received, I'd noticed other patients approaching her frustrated too. Since this there are now posters in the reception area stating people are called in different orders because they are attending for different reasons.
I booked an appointment for the removal of the IUD I was unhappy with and plans to change to another.
On this return the clinic was on time and quality of care again excellent during the procedure. The only negative experience I had was feeling again pressured to keep the IUD I already had in and felt like I wasn't believed when explaining the reasons why I wanted to change. I was genuinely upset about this and very nearly left without having the IUD removed and replaced with the alternative. Thankfully I stayed and had it removed and replaced. During the procedure the staff were again brilliantly caring.
I understand the importance of cost with these things but someone cannot be expected to continue with something they aren't comfortable with and then be made to feel upset and not believed to the point of leaving.
I appreciate my feedback sounds contradictory but its so important for the patient to feel listened to and also not led or made to feel pressured for a cost effective option. Like my title says 'mixed feelings' which is what I have about this service. The positive I take away from this is the quality of care being excellent during the procedures but let down with the drop in waiting time and being made to feel uncomfortable.
