"mixed feelings"

About: Locala Community Partnerships CIC / Kirklees Sexual Health

(as the patient),

Having attended the contraception clinic in Huddersfield  (ICaSH) for the first time last year I was impressed with the quality of care I received. When I attended for my 'procedure' I was very anxious and overwhelmed and felt led and pressured in the type of IUD I was to have, despite feeling led the dr and assistant were very caring.

I returned recently unhappy with my IUD for a number of reasons but understood the importance of keeping it in for over 12months (financial reasons for the NHS) but felt unable to do this and explained I'd originally attended for a different one but felt swayed to have the one I was unhappy with.

When I returned (for the reasons mentioned above) I used the drop in service and was waiting over an hour which I found very frustrating as there were no indications on time frames and when I enquired with reception it wasn't well received, I'd noticed other patients approaching her frustrated too. Since this there are now posters in the reception area stating people are called in different orders because they are attending for different reasons.

I booked an appointment for the removal of the IUD I was unhappy with and plans to change to another.

On this return the clinic was on time and quality of care again excellent during the procedure. The only negative experience I had was feeling again pressured to keep the IUD I already had in and felt like I wasn't believed when explaining the reasons why I wanted to change. I was genuinely upset about this and very nearly left without having the IUD removed and replaced with the alternative. Thankfully I stayed and had it removed and replaced. During the procedure the staff were again brilliantly caring.

I understand the importance of cost with these things but someone cannot be expected to continue with something they aren't comfortable with and then be made to feel upset and not believed to the point of leaving.

I appreciate my feedback sounds contradictory but its so important for the patient to feel listened to and also not led or made to feel pressured for a cost effective option. Like my title says 'mixed feelings' which is what I have about this service. The positive I take away from this is the quality of care being excellent during the procedures but let down with the drop in waiting time and being made to feel uncomfortable.

Dear Anon1234

Thank you so much for sharing your story with us. Firstly, I am really pleased to see such positive comments about the care you received by our clinical team but as you point out there are improvements we can make.

I have discussed your comments with the team here and they have most certainly been taken on board. We would like to apologise that you felt under pressure to have a particular type of IUD and also that you felt under pressure to keep it when you requested for it to be removed. You had given it plenty of time to settle down and if you weren't happy after 12 months there should have been no issues having it removed - once again we are sorry you were made to feel that way.

We are always trying to improve our service and based on feedback from other clients we have put posters in the waiting areas so let everyone know why some people are seen quicker than others. We are also asking the reception team to let people know roughly what the waiting times are. Since your last visit we have added more drop in sessions at all our centres, this was in response to feedback such as yours and a survey with carried out with people who use the service.

Once again, thank you for sending this feedback, it really important for people to let us know when things don't go well so that we can try and put it right.

Best wishes

Sarah
