"It has been very stressful to go hours without anyone checking in"

About: Royal Hospital for Children and Young People (Edinburgh) / Castle Mey Ward

(as a parent/guardian),

During my newborn baby's inpatient admission, I have been surprised how wholly medical the experience has felt. There has been no acknowledgement or checking in on a human level about how challenging it is for parents to find themselves here with their newborn.

Although I’m appreciative that staff are very busy and this is impacted by the acuity of the ward, it has been very stressful to go hours without anyone checking in, receiving any updates, or even given a sense of what to expect. I felt we have had to ask most things to receive information.

I did not get to a ward until close to 3 am and was only able to get 40 minutes' sleep. I was very surprised that the bed was folded up first thing and sheets removed. I am unsure why this couldn’t be left down. I have been exhausted and would have hoped to rest where possible during the day particularly as breastfeeding.

Dear Lauren745

Thank you for sharing your feedback with us via Care Opinion.

I'm so sorry to hear of your poor experience at the hospital when your newborn baby was admitted. This must have been a very upsetting and distressing time for you.

I have passed this on to the Clinical Management Team who will respond further.

Thank you

Louise

Dear Lauren745,

Thank you for giving us your feedback. I would like to apologise for your experience which you felt was substandard to the experience we hoped you would have had.

It would be normal practice to lift parents bed in order for domestics service to clean around. However in this case it would have been acceptable to allow the parent to rest following this happening.

I can only once again apologise that this didn't happen. I will share this with my team.

I will also remind my staff to ensure they check in on the wellbeing of the mum and child no matter how busy they are.

Mark Martin
