During my newborn baby's inpatient admission, I have been surprised how wholly medical the experience has felt. There has been no acknowledgement or checking in on a human level about how challenging it is for parents to find themselves here with their newborn.
Although I’m appreciative that staff are very busy and this is impacted by the acuity of the ward, it has been very stressful to go hours without anyone checking in, receiving any updates, or even given a sense of what to expect. I felt we have had to ask most things to receive information.
I did not get to a ward until close to 3 am and was only able to get 40 minutes' sleep. I was very surprised that the bed was folded up first thing and sheets removed. I am unsure why this couldn’t be left down. I have been exhausted and would have hoped to rest where possible during the day particularly as breastfeeding.
