"Attitude and commitment can really make a difference"

About: Maternity Care (Wards 21-24) / Pregnancy Scanning

(as the patient),

I had my 12 week scan around 8 weeks ago and it wasn’t a nice experience at all. The nurse was really unfriendly and the appointment felt very clinical. The nurse didn’t speak much and was very matter a fact. At the end I felt really disheartened.

I was therefore not looking forward to my 20 week scan. However, as soon as we arrived the nurse greeted us and I could tell she was really lovely. She was so friendly and spoke to us the full way through the appointment. She explained everything clearly and was so compassionate and caring. I couldn’t believe the difference this made and she really made this experience really special for us.

It’s amazing how much someone’s attitude and commitment can really make a difference and I’m really grateful for her.

Dear Mandaj

Thank you for sharing your recent experiences in relation to your 12 and 20 week scan. I am sorry to read that your 12 week scan was not a nice experience. It is important that staff demonstrate care and compassion at all times and I am disappointed to read that this was not what you experienced.

You second visit does sound very different and this is the standard that I would expect to see. It is good to know that the staff made this a special for you. As you say staff attitude makes such a difference. The team will reflect on your comments and I know they will be saddened to know that you left your 12 week scan feeling disheartened.

Thank you again for your comments.

I wish you all the best for the next few months

Lise

Dear Mandaj

I wonder if you would be able to contact Patient Affairs at University Hospital Hairmyres (UHH) as we would like to ensure that the relevant staff are reflecting on your feedback. I note that the post is coded under the Early Pregnancy Assessment Unit at UHH and colleagues have reminded me that these scans would be carried out in the maternity day unit.

To ensure the learning is appropriately directed, I wonder if you would either phone or email Patient Affairs as below.

email: PatientAffairs.Hairmyres@lanarkshire.scot.nhs.uk or phone 01355 585325

Thank you

Lise
