"I was emotionally drained"

About: Royal Cornwall Hospital (Treliske) / Delivery Suite Royal Cornwall Hospital (Treliske) / Wheal Fortune (postnatal) Ward Royal Cornwall Hospital (Treliske) / Wheal Rose Ward/Maternity Day Assessment

(as the patient),

During the late stages of pregnancy I was told I had mild pre-eclampsia and was induced was in and out of day assessment and they was lovely! I was then induced with no luck, was moved up to delivery suite and Waters broke that's when things turned bad. My body went into shock and had all sorts happen during labour which to be honest I can't remember, just know the team was lovely and saved my life!

Then moved down to wheal fortune ward, my time there was absolutely horrendous! It was during covid so no visitors, the staff was unsupportive and didn't seem to care! I felt like this was the worst few days of my life and it's really traumatic to think back at how I was treated and all the other mums who only had nurses to rely on as family members couldn't visit! I was emotionally drained and in truth I just wanted my family but they was unsupportive, it was suggested that I was depressed and struggling with my baby which I wasn't, in the end I discharged myself! Still with high BP and on 20 tablets a day!

Hi Sofa999,

I'm Judy one of the birth reflections midwives. thank you for providing your feedback.

I am so sorry that you had such a difficult pregnancy and birth Journey, made worse by the hard covid rules at the time.

I am, however, glad that you feel you were kept safe on labour ward; and can completely understand why you may not remember a lot of it. My role is to support birthing families, like you, to understand your birth journey better. we can review your birth timeline and help you find clarity and understanding around events that may have happened and how they are managed.

if you need more information about our service or feel this is something you would like please email myself and Jenny on rcht.birthreflections@nhs.net., or you can leave a message on the birth reflections phone 07901 328550. we would need your name and date of birth so we can find your records.

Kind regards

Judy Baker

Hi Sofa999,

Thank you for your feedback.

I am very sorry to read about your very difficult experience on Wheal Fortune ward, during a time that there were strict covid restrictions and you were also unable to have your family visit and support you.

If you would like to discuss this further, please contact myself or Midwifery Sister, Sarah Coe on Wheal fortune ward 01872252150/2159, or email me Kathleen.bell7@nhs.net so that we can understand more about your time on Wheal Fortune and offer you some support following this negative experience if you would like it – I can see that Judy from our Birth Reflections team has already been in touch above.

In the meantime, I will ensure that your feedback is shared with the team here on Wheal Fortune so they can reflect on your experience.

Best Wishes
