"Distinct lack of communication"

About: Southmead Hospital / Gynaecology

Very disappointing experience today. My my wife was booked in for a routine procedure. When we urned up, her name was written in handwritten text on the bottom of a printed list which set alarm bells ringing. Having been up since 5am in order to eat and drink, we checked her in at 10;45 am. We both work busy jobs and had taken holiday allocation to make this appointment. It got to around 3pm when I started worrying. The nurses on the ward gave no proactive communication to us as to what was going on. Due to the wait, my wife was suffering from anxiety and I asked a nurse for reassurance. This took an hour once the rest of the ward was empty. Anyway, 5:30pm came around, 12 hours after my wife’s last drink. The consultant then came up and said the operation would have to be cancelled. It was a joy to have to pay for all day parking, my lunch, and both of our annual leave from work to sit in a ward and be ignored. I now won’t be able to accompany her if and when her revisit is to happen. Absolutely appalled and very much looking forward to a contact for an official compliant and findings of an internal review.

Thank you for your comments, I can appreciate that this must have been very distressing for your wife and of course yourself.

I have forwarded your comments to the Gynaecology Department for them to be aware of what happened.

From your comments it would appear that you wish to make a formal complaint, if you would like to email Complaints@nbt.nhs.uk with your wife's name and date of birth etc, we will be able to investigate what happened.

Clearly, this is not the experience we would have wished for any of our patients.

I sorry that this happened.

Yours sincerely, Sue Needs, Deputy Advice & Complaints Team Manager.
