"Chemotherapy Ward"

About: University Hospital Wishaw / Medical Oncology

(as the patient),

I received a lovely welcome by the Chemotherapy staff in the ward where I was receiving my treatment. However, at lunchtime there was never the choice of brown bread for sandwiches (& I don’t eat white). This happened for 2-3 weeks until one of the staff members - Lorna - told me that she had been thinking about me at the weekend before my Wednesday chemo day & how she would have to ensure that there was a nice wee choice of sandwiches made up with brown bread. From that week on I’ve never had to ask as the staff always remember that it’s brown bread I eat & they’ve always got a good supply for me. To me this is such a simple thing but it shows how much the staff cared about me & wanted to have one less thing for me to worry about - there’s always enough going on when you’re getting chemo!

Hi Meg

Thank you very much for taking the time to share your experiences with us. I am sorry we were not able to provide your with you a choice during your first few visits but am pleased to learn that the staff addressed this. It is important for us to listen to feedback and we welcome this very much. I will share your post with the staff in our three units as it is important that we learn what matters to you. As you say it is often the simple things that make the difference. It can be a very worrying time during chemotherapy and so it is good to know your felt cared about and had one less thing to worry about.

Thank you for taking the time to contact us and share your experience. I hope your treatment is progressing well.

Mhairi
