"Noisy nursing staff"

About: Borders General Hospital / General Medicine

(as the patient),

My recent experience of an admission for observation and treatment.

This Ward was too noisy and the people creating the noise were the Nursing Staff.

I was not asked how I wanted my care plan to be and I did not see or sign one. A major part for me is to be treated with respect and dignity, there was none of that shown, in fact I had one nurse being down right rude.

I asked a health care worker if we could shut the bedroom door at night as the noise coming from the corridor was loud and this was between staff discussing other patients also the noise of squeaky pieces of equipment.

I was asked to stay for another 2 nights for further observation but I refused, as I had not slept a wink and knew I would get peace and quiet at home.

Dear Jaqcol,

Thank you for letting us know about your experience.

I am sorry that we fell short of your expectations in respect of how your care was planned and the environment within which it was delivered. I am also concerned to read that you felt that you were not treated with respect or dignity and that you decided to go home earlier than the ward would have wished.

I would be grateful for the opportunity to meet with you or facilitate a discussion with the Clinical Nurse Manager for the area into which you were admitted to get to know more about your experience and consider what we might have done better and whether there is aything we can do not just in your case but for other patients we admit for observation and treatment to improve.

Please get in touch with me at edmund.witkowski@borders.scot.nhs.uk or call 01896 827201.

In the meantime, I hope that you are feeling better and if required, getting the care you need.

Kind regards

Ed

Dear Jaqcol,

Like Ed above, I was enormously concerned to read of your negative experiences with us at the BGH. I'm terribly sorry that you were not involved in decisions around your care as this is something we endeavour to deliver with every patient. I am also sorry that you were not treated with dignity and respect as these are key components of high quality care. I am very concerned that you overheard discussions about other patients as this raises concern around confidentiality and we will need to look into this in a lot more detail. If you felt able to have a discussion with our Clinical Nurse Manager, then I am sure that we could learn a lot from your experience which will result in better care for future patients.

I am an enormous advocate of Care Opinion because I believe that it gives patients and their relatives a voice that can shape the future of care within their local health facility. It also allows your experience to come directly and quickly to those with the ability to drive these changes forward.

I will forward your story to all of the nurses within MAU and hope that it will make us all think about the importance of sleep in the healing process and also (and very importantly) the importance of confidentiality.

I hope that you are now feeling much better.

With best wishes,

Lynn
