I felt unwell and my GP referred me immediately. This was my first visit to East Surrey. About 7 hours later (after fluid and pain relief drips, blood tests, seeing a doctor, having a CT scan and being moved onto a ward), I had surgery to remove an infected appendix. A good result for me after thorough preparation. I was impressed by the informality - ward staff, surgeons, anaesthetist all on first name basis. The parts of the hospital I saw were very clean and I felt that attention was paid to cleanliness as a priority.
Not everything was smooth. Discharge took hours so procedures and communication could be improved so that beds can be freed up more quickly. Also, doctors could let the ward know more quickly what their timescale for surgery is. The ward thought it wouldn't be till the following morning but the surgeon arrived to say it would be in a couple of hours.
All in all, a good NHS experience!
