"discharged with no care or help"

About: Cumberland Infirmary

When I was admitted on to the ward ELM SAU I was put in a room alone with 4 nurses. Undressed and rolled about on a bed checked for marks on my body, they seamed more interested in my tattoo. I and my husband asked several times for my normal medication, we will sort it. I was left on my back with a light shining down into my face. 3 further times I asked still no medication. I got my full meds at 12 the following day. I just wanted to get out asap.I listened to nurses shouting from one end of the ward to the other being talked at not to. I had the door shut most of the time alone, I put earplugs in to sleep and even when I read. The people on this ward are poorly some have no voice, if I was treated like this and have a voice I feel so sorry for them. my husband said it was like something out of a sketch from Dick and Doms TV show. The only positive was my consultant and the OTs and Physio really care about people. Even when I was given paracetamol IV I was not asked my name DOB or anything. I felt I was thrown out with no aftercare plan put in place. I was given a time when I could arrange for my husband to collect me. told my tablets and letter were placed in the locked drawer and told when you what them you can have them. No information was given. I was left to go not knowing what the future held..

Dear Karen,

We are very sorry to receive your comments and concerns via NHS Choices about your experience in Elm ward.

We take all issues surrounding patient care very seriously and it is very disappointing to read your comments.

The events that you describe re your medication and lack of support at discharge are not our usual standard and were clearly very distressing for you; being treated this way is never acceptable.

Without further investigation it is difficult to ascertain what went wrong and without the details of your admission I am unable to look into this any further at the moment. I totally understand that this experience must have left you feeling very frustrated and upset

If you are unhappy with the care or treatment you received you have the right to complain.

The PALS team (Patient Advice and Liaison Service) can help you through this process or put you in touch with the senior staff members who may be able to discuss your concerns with you.

They can be contacted on

• 01228 814008 between 10am and 3pm, Monday to Friday,

• E-mail to PALSCIC@ncuh.nhs.uk

• Patient Advice & Liaison Service, Cumberland Infirmary, Newtown Road, Carlisle, CA2 7HY

Once again, please accept my sincere apologies. In the meantime your comments will be passed to the Matron responsible for this area and to the Head of Nursing for Patient Experience.

Best regards,

Alison S-D
