"Felt no-one was bothering"

I went into hospital as a day patient for a lumpectomy and should have been discharged that evening. However, after coming round from the operation I was sick and passed out. I was told I would need to stay in overnight and that I would be transferred to another ward – Ward 9. A porter collected me with a chair (not my bed) at 7 pm. The porter left me at the side of the bed in the ward and placed my belongings, including my bag, on the bed. The porter then went to the nurse's station and handed over my notes.

At five minutes to 9 I was still sat in the chair with no-one having been to see me. I had no buzzer to attract attention, the bed wasn’t pumped to a height where I could get in myself and that was all I wanted to do – to get in bed and rest. I tried to stand and ask for help but I was sick, I had a bowl on my lap. A gentlemen walked past and I shouted for his attention, but he walked past, I assume he didn’t hear. I tried to reach my bag so I could get to my phone, I wanted to phone my family.

An auxiliary walked in finally and I told them how long I had been there like this, and they fetched the senior nurse.

I was apologized to and told it was due to the changeover.

The senior nurse asked if I felt like I've been dumped. I burst into tears.

My bed was sorted, and a doctor put me on a drip overnight.

After that the care I received was fine.

I am not one to complain and this is not a complaint, but I wanted to tell my opinion because at the time I was ill, miserable, had just had an operation and I felt like no one was bothering and I wouldn’t like anyone else to go through that.

I mentioned it to a nurse the next day who said it was the porter’s fault, but the porter did their job, and does the changeover usually take two hours?

I was told to give my feedback as I do not want to make a complaint, but I would like to think that changes are made and this doesn’t happen to anyone else.
