After being diagnosed with Genetic Haemochromatosis, I subsequently started my weekly Venesections at the Ulster Hospital, Medical Day Case Unit. The build up to my first treatment was filled with anxiety and dread. Upon arrival on the day of my first Venesection all my worries and stress were put to ease as Juvy (the Deputy Sister) took me under her wing and put me at ease and reassured me everything was fine and my treatment was very routine. Within 10 minutes I had conversed with nearly all the staff within the ward and I felt like a member the family. I was so relieved!
After being made comfortable Kerry (the Staff Nurse) sat with me and explained clearly and with great knowledge step by step what was going to happen and how the procedure will work over the next few months. She had prepared a pack of literature and a handy progress booklet for recording my results. Kerry also asked if I had any questions, which I did and she answered them all. My first Venesection was administered by Juvy and it went so well, I hardly felt a thing. Unfortunately I took a bit of a reaction at the end and almost passed out, but my goodness it felt like every member of staff rallied to my bed side. Within seconds I was flat on the bed with legs raised and taking Oxygen. I recall Karyn, Phoebe, Juvy, and Kerry (there may have been more) helping to come back round. Within minutes I was back round sitting up with a cup of tea. All the staff monitored me for at least 45 minutes to make sure I was okay. I really felt like the situation was dealt with total control and utmost professionalism.
Each and every Venesection I had was a great experience, and believe it or not I ended up looking forward to them, as the staff were all so upbeat and great to talk to, the atmosphere was a joy to be in. I had a couple of sessions with Dianne after my first VS, she kept me at such ease with her ability to keep my mind occupied while she inserting the needle, I’ll always be grateful for that.
Today after quite a few Venesections I’m finally at my goal and can now say with glee that I’m in maintenance. I can honestly say I have an overwhelming respect and admiration for this amazing team at the Ulster Hospital Medical Day Case unit.
I would really like to express my sincere thanks to all the staff I’ve mentioned above and also to Amanda, Janice, Michelle, Sarah, Hanna, Pamela, Cheryl, Katie, Cate and Val they’re all fantastic. Thank you.
