"Baby with breathing concerns"

About: Crosshouse Hospital / Accident & Emergency

(as a parent/guardian),

Seen in triage after what felt like lengthy wait, despite a history of blue lips, vomiting, reduced intake and increased irritability. Temperature was above 39 throughout A&E wait - couldn’t have anymore ibuprofen or calpol. Never seen by a nurse again, never mind a doctor.

Left after 3 hours from triage, as baby had managed to keep calpol dose and a few sips of sugary juice down. Very disappointed in care received. Appreciate that staff are thin on the ground and emergencies happen frequently given the area we were in but should my baby have deteriorated, I’m not sure how it would have gone down.

Thank you for sharing your feedback. I appreciate that this must have been a very worrying situation and I sincerely apologise for the lengthy wait that you and your baby experienced in the Emergency Department.

Every patient is assessed by an experienced nurse on arrival in ED and care is subsequently prioritised on the basis of clinical need. Please be assured that if your baby's condition had deteriorated, they would have been reassessed and their care re-prioritised.

It is my sincere hope that your baby is now beginning to recover, but if you have any ongoing concerns, I would encourage you to contact your genal practitioner in the first instance.

With best wishes,

Linda
