"Care of the Elderly"

About: Royal Cornwall Hospital (Treliske) / Trauma and orthopaedics St Michael's Hospital / St Michaels Ward

(as a relative),

Father had a fall and fractured his hip. Whilst the staff were very personable when he was transferred it became apparent that the care was not particularly up to standard.

He arrived at St Michael’s stinking, dehydrated, malnourished with a (I’m led to believe) common postoperative swallowing disorder. No one at Treliske recognised any of these issues.

I am a big supporter of the NHS and their plights suffered but I’m almost scared that he has now been transferred back to have this swallowing problem seen to.

I’m hoping that this was a one off issue.

Dear Scared Daughter,

Thank you for taking the time to share your story with us. I was both shocked and saddened to learn of your father's experience where he has been left dehydrated, malnourished and unclean. This is not how we would expect any of our patients to be treated while receiving care at one of our hospitals.

To ensure your fathers experience is properly investigated and if you would be like to, I encourage you to contact our Patient and Family Experience team (complaints) to raise your concerns formally. Their details are below, and I have already shared your feedback with them so you can quote your story if you choose to contact them.

Tel: 01872 252793

Email: rcht.patientexperience@nhs.net

In the meantime, I will share your story with the teams who would have overseen your fathers care, so they are able to reflect on his experience and put improvements in place where possible, so this does not happen again.

Thank you again for taking the time to share your story with us.

Best wishes,

Jess
