"Lack of after care advice"

About: Inverclyde Royal Hospital / Accident & Emergency

(as a relative),

I attended A and E at IRH with my adult son since he had injured his ankle in training for a second time in 6 months. I thought about accessing the pharmacy in the first instance given how stretched NHS emergency services are but wondered if he should need an X-ray.

My son did receive an X-ray and it confirmed a sprain. The medic my son spoke to didn’t update my son on worsening advice, pain management, whether tubi grip would help support it or not, he didn’t receive an offer of tubi grip or support from supplies, and when my son had said it’s painful most of the time prior to the current sprain he wasn’t offered a physio referral or even if it would work or not. Being  a nurse myself I appreciate the restrictions in emergency services and supplies however basic after care advice is required.

Dear Sharry

I am sorry to hear that you have had a negative experience in ED following your son's injury. It is very unusual not to have been given worsening advice or even analgesia if that was required. If you would like to forward your son's details then I can check this out for you by discussing with the ED team who saw your son. I hope he is recovering well. Just to advise in the meantime, patients can self refer to physio if your son feels there is still a need for this. Would avoid any further delay.

Kind Regards

Hi Alison

Thank you for your response. I agree that it is unusual not to be given worsening advice and analgesia and my reasons for being confused and upset. I was with him in the waiting room for the duration and following his X-ray he’s was called back into the ED department for approximately 20 to 30 seconds before being discharged home. He was visibly upset due to not knowing this information. I can confirm he left without any further after care/ leaflets or analgesia etc. I have since referred him for private physiotherapy due to his ongoing pain and discomfort and he has experienced for the past 6 months as reported at ED. Is there a private method to provide details?
