"Getting a wheelchair from WestMARC"

About: WestMARC (Lanarkshire) / Adult Wheelchair Clinic

(as a service user),

Having been diagnosed with a progressively worsening mobility illness, my first contact with WestMARC was a really helpful discussion with Susan at the end of 2020. She explained the different types of wheelchairs available and also talked through scooters and the best one for my condition.

In August 2021, Moira from WestMARC talked helpfully through the timings allowing for a ramp to be built at the front of the house.

In September 2021, Brian from WestMARC visited to assess the environment. He brought a wheelchair with him so that I could see how it felt. This was very helpful. His conclusion was that I needed an electric wheelchair with a tight turning circle involving six wheels and he arranged for an order to be placed.

The wheelchair was delivered in December 2021 and Brian was again there to demonstrate how to work it. He also took time to take me down the ramp - which was quite large and which I was quite worried about – even taking me to the patio to review the work we had done to make it possible.

Brian also performed a review of the wheelchair in March 2022 to adjust the height of the seat. He helpfully arranged for this to be done at home so that I was not without the wheelchair at any point.

In May 2022, Brian also attended to help me overcome my concerns about using the ramp by taking me down the ramp and out to the pavement over what was not always smooth ground. I really appreciated his willingness to do this.

It was really helpful having the same person deal with the wheelchair after it was in place and I was most grateful to Brian and to WestMARC for arranging that.
