"Extremely painful hysteroscopy"

About: Hull Royal Infirmary / Gynaecology

(as a service user),

I had a scan to identify why I was spotting after menopause. They were not able to see due to fibroids being in the way. I was referred for a hysteroscopy in Hull.

I had a camera investigation a number of years before. My cervix was injected to dilate it. The process wasn't comfortable but tolerable. I assumed the hysteroscopy would be similar.

The staff introduced themselves, the consultant explained what was about to happen. I was told I might experience pain similar to a period pain. I felt reassured and at ease. I was told that if at anytime I felt discomfort, to let them know.

The nurse engaged me in light distracting conversation whilst the consultant performed the procedure.

I am not a wimp when it comes to pain. I have given birth to three induced children with anaesthesia. I can honestly say that I have never experienced pain like this in all my life. The nurse seemed to think that holding her hand and taking deep breaths would help.

The consultant stopped and seemed impatient. They said they hadn't been able to look around my uterus yet. I could have had gas and air, have a stinging paracetamol injection or make another appointment for a general anaesthetic. Actually, that wasn't an option for me due to blood pressure problems, so I thought I'd try again.

I was reduced to shouting stop, I can't stand it. The consultant said they'd managed to see and everything was alright. They spoke very matter of factly and not at all empathic. I was aware that they were talking to me but I couldn't concentrate on what they were saying. I felt shocked, ashamed of myself, traumatized and I apologized for being reduced to a wimp. I can't recall what was said about why the spotting might have occurred.

I was given tea and biscuits.

For days I have felt demoralised and traumatized. I had been completely unprepared for excruciating pain. It has really helped to read that others have experienced the same and I am not alone.
