"Difficult to get updates during my mum's stay on Ward 8"

About: University Hospital Wishaw / General Medicine (Wards 5 & 8)

(as a relative),

Recently my mum had a fall in her came home and I accompanied her to A&E at Wishaw Hospital in a ambulance. As I expected it was extremely busy and it was 12 hours before my mum was transferred to a ward having lain on a trolley.

Mum is 94 and has Alzheimer’s so this was very distressing for her. After a short time on the receiving ward, she was admitted to Ward 8 and spent a week there.

It was not a good experience for her or me. Again staff were very busy but as a relative you are certainly made to realise that! It was extremely difficult to get updates by phone or in person and on occasions staff walked past me and made no eye contact as I stood at the nurses’ station on the ward. A poster in the corridor promotes person centred care but that was definitely lacking.

I was also sad to see another elderly person on the ward lying very exposed in a hospital gown and alerted a nurse to that on more than one occasion. I actually dreaded my visits each day.

I would accept the correct clinical care was provided but nothing more than that and sincerely hope my mum can end her days in the care home without another hospital stay.
