"Care and compassion for childbirth"

About: Borders General Hospital / Maternity care

(as a service user),

After a straightforward pregnancy I developed high blood pressure at 36 weeks which involved me requiring regular monitoring in the labour ward and ward 16 in my last few weeks of pregnancy.

A decision was made by a consultant to induce me to avoid further risks of pre-eclampsia - although this was not successful the team at the BGH were so kind, calm and reassuring whilst respecting my wishes at all times.

The following week I came in for a planned caesarean section to avoid further complication and from our arrival at 7am to being taken at 11.30 the staff were faultless including the domestic staff ensuring that my husband was watered, the midwives for being calm and reassuring, the obstetric Dr for talking us through the process and answering any questions we had and the anaesthetist who took her time to explain her role in the process and the expectations of how and what I should feel.

The caesarean section itself was a lovely experience with music playing and again the staff being so kind and caring. Within a matter of minutes we were met by our baby son and the remainder of the operation happened in a calm and timely manner.

Following this we spent 2 nights in the BGH on ward 16 and the labour ward following a slight complication with my condition.

I can honestly say that every member of staff we had any dealings with were absolutely fantastic and a credit to themselves and their profession. The care we were given as a new family of 3 was second to none and we could not have wished for a better level of care. No stone was left unturned, all information was given to us in a relevant and understandable manner and all of my wishes were respected and communicated to other staff.

Thank you so much to each and every one of you, but special mentions to Libby, Alexa, Louise, Pam, Eunice and Nicky for everything you did for us. What could have been a traumatic and difficult experience was made so much better by the standard of care and compassion offered by everyone involved. We can’t thank you all enough.
