"Left in bed in a hospital gown that didn't fit"

About: Warrington Hospital / Accident and emergency Warrington Hospital / Colorectal surgery

(as a service user),

My dad was taken by ambulance to Warrington hospital. He spent more than 24 hours in A&E. Then to be taken to A4.

He was in there for 4 weeks where his care was shocking. He went in with constipation. He was 83 and a tall big man. He was left in bed most of the time in a hospital gown that didn't fit. A catheter was put on him and a tube up his backside. Drips so he couldn't move. Nurses told us he was too big to move. He wasn't taken down for scans as they hadn't dressed him. He had a few when they did get him dressed. No physio as he wasn't dressed. A  portable x-ray I was told picked up a perforated bowel. But a senior doctor said he would have got sepsis if that was the case.

He was put in palliative care where he had picked up a chest infection and couldn't breathe lay down. He continually asked to be put in his chair so he could eat. They wouldn't move him. He had 2 nights he couldn't breathe. Nurses weren't quick at attending buzzers.

He passed away in mid August 2022. A lot more happened and now I'm left heartbroken losing my precious dad.

Good Afternoon,

Firstly, our condolences on the passing of your father.

Secondly, we are sorry to read about his and your experience of his care leading up to his passing. We would ask that you contact our patient advice and liaison service - PALS, so that we can find out more about his care, so that discussions can be had with those involved to improve patient care in future. We appreciate that this will not help ease how you are currently feeling, but it will help us address dignity and care issues you have raised in your feedback.

PALS can be contacted via email on: whh.pals@nhs.net or by calling 01925 275512.

Kind Regards

Gina
