"Left on my own with no real practical support"

About: Adult Health and Social Care Localities / Community Social Work Eastwood

(as a service user),

I was left sandwiched between my teenage son on the Autism Spectrum, and my ailing elderly mother who suffered mental impairment and was very difficult. I was left on my own with no real practical support, and none whatsoever from local social services, who initially refused to help me as my brother in the USA, who rarely visited Scotland, was my mother's PoA. However, after our local GP did a test and decided my mother was functional mentally, we could change her PoA to myself and life became a little easier. However, it was still more stress than any human should experience and I barely survived the experience.

Dear Zsa Zsa

My name is Lee McLaughlin, Head of Adult Services: Communities and Wellbeing for East Renfrewshire Health and Social Care Partnership.

I was very sorry to hear of your experiences, supporting your son and your elderly mum. It sounds a very stressful time for you. There is a Carers Centre in East Renfrewshire and they can be contacted at www.eastrenfrewshirecarers.co.uk or give them a call on 0141 638 4888.

Power of Attorney is a complex process and its impact on you has been substantial. I was however pleased that your GP was able to assist you.

I am particularly keen that staff learn from your experience. I also want to ensure that you are getting the support you need.

In order to do that, can I please ask that you contact Jacqueline Laing, Eastwood Localities Manager for East Renfrewshire HSCP at Jacqueline.Laing@eastrenfrewshire.gov.uk

Best wishes

Lee McLaughlin

Hi Zsa Zsa

My name is Mark Mulhern. I am the Manager of East Renfrewshire Carers’ Centre and I thought it might be helpful to follow up on the earlier response from Lee McLaughlin.

The Carers’ Centre offers emotional and practical support to family members who provide care and support to someone with a health condition.

Whilst we do try to promote the Centre and the support available to carers in East Renfrewshire, unfortunately many carers are either unaware of the service or do not want to ask for help for a range of reasons, despite experiencing difficult and challenging situations.

We would be very happy to discuss what support we could offer you and will do our upmost to help you with the pressures of being a carer. Please do not hesitate to get in touch as we would be keen to see how we can help.

With best wishes

Mark
