"Previous misdiagnosis"

About: General practices in Greater Glasgow & Clyde Royal Alexandra Hospital / Gastroenterology

(as the patient),

I have been attending the Gastroenterology Clinic, on this occasion I saw a different Consultant who I had not seen before. I was apprehensive as I had been dealing with my consultant for several years and they know my condition and symptoms well. This Consultant during the entire consultation proceed to tell me i did not have a Pancreas problem and that my previous diagnosis was basically wrong and the medication I was taking was only having a placebo effect.

They did not listen to me and did not ask how I was at that point in time, preferring to go back to the other consultants' opinions. I told them I was hardly eating yet they told me I was doing well. After the consultation a GP at my medical practice was sent a letter going back several years in my medical history, which was not relevant. It was suggested that I was obsessed with there being a problem with my pancreas and that I had gone private to get an opinion as I was convinced it was my pancreas - even though I had told them it was the other consultant who wanted me to be referred, but my GP had refused and I was so unwell I went private.

They also said I should identify all foods that caused a problem and cut them out which is all food so this was basically telling me not to eat. It quite clearly stated this on my notes about the food.

After seeing this consultant and being told nothing was going to be done, I went private again and I was given a diagnosis of Bile Acid Malabsorption and the medication for this has gotten rid of my nausea and pain. It is ridiculous that I was misdiagnosed previously and being left in that condition.

Update posted by S69 (the patient)

The complaints department did respond to my initial complaint but my complaint was not upheld despite me providing proof. I contacted them again when I received that response telling them I was not happy and would be taking this matter further due to the misdiagnosis.

I was advised to raise the matter here first to give the correct people the right to reply before taking this further.

Dear S69

I am sorry that this has not been resolved to your satisfaction. As your concerns have been formally addressed via stage 2 of NHSGGC’s complaints process we are unable to comment further. However, as you disagree with the outcome, you do have the option of referring your complaint to the Scottish Public Services Ombudsman. The SPSO is the final stage for considering complaints about public sector services in Scotland. If you do decide to take your complaint to the SPSO, please be aware that they do not normally investigate complaints if you have known about the problem for more than 12 months before complaining. The contact details for the SPSO are: Freepost SPSO (this is all you need to write on the envelope, and you do not need to use a stamp)

Tel: 0800 377 7330

Kind Regards

Nicole
