"They made me feel like everything was under control"

About: Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh at Little France / Maternity care

(as a service user),

I was routed to the ERI at short notice after being told St John's hospital was full on the morning I went into labour. While that in itself was stressful, I had nothing but a positive experience throughout from arrival and triage through to the forceps delivery in surgery. I can't remember all the names, but every midwife, doctor, nurse and anaesthetist who dealt with me were professional, friendly and helpful. One particular doctor, Gabby, stands out as explaining things clearly and calmly which helped myself and my partner remain informed and calm through the process. 

I was obviously a bit worried with the changing situation with my baby's status, but the constant reassurance from all staff, and the quick reaction to needing to go into surgery were helpful and made me feel like everything was under control at all times. I'm very grateful to everyone involved, both during labour and delivery, and on the ward afterwards where the midwives and ongoing clinical checks were so helpful and informative.

I can only imagine how frightening it was for you the changing situation with your baby’s status and the need to go into surgery. It is always our intention to provide excellent and responsive care for our women and their families, so I was delighted to hear that you had such a positive experience. I apologise for the anxiety caused when you were asked to go to Edinburgh, I appreciate this was very stressful for you both.
