"Professional caring and on each occasion"

About: Urgent Community Response Mid Hants

(as a staff member posting for a carer/relative),

I am writing to tell you how supported I felt by your Urgent Community Response Team when they came in response to the Paramedics request. My husband had had a seizure followed by a period of semi-consciousness, had a very high temperature and a suspected infection. Because he had indicated on his Respect form that he wished to avoid hospital admission they worked hard at treating him at home. It initially seemed to work as the next morning his obs had significantly improved. However, following a second seizure later the second day it was decided that he needed to be admitted for intravenous antibiotics.

This was a very worrying time for me, but the nurses attended in the afternoon, the evening, the next morning and at short notice after the second seizure. They explained clearly to me what they were doing and why, and assured me that they would come out to me if anything changed or I was at all worried. They were professional caring and on each occasion stayed past their finishing time. The young lady who visited on the first evening was still here at 9pm.

The nurses who attended after the second seizure waited with me until the ambulance had taken my husband to hospital - this was well past their finishing time. I was impressed by their dedication to their patients and family.

Whatever the failings of the wider NHS, I cannot fault this section and its staff. I felt FULLY supported right through this traumatic experience.

My husband was diagnosed with a bile duct infection, and was in BNHH for 4 weeks. He is now in Alton Community Hospital for rehabilitation and we are awaiting equipment and an increased care package before he can come home.

Thank you.

I am the consultant for the Mid Hampshire Urgent Community Response service. Looking after individuals at home instead of hospital when it is safe to do so.

Thank you so much for taking the time to send us your feedback about how it felt for you and your loved one to be cared for by the UCR team.

You and your husband seem to have been through so much with this episode of care. So many difficult decisions and transfers of care into different services.

It sounds like the UCR really did go above and beyond to respect your wishes, ensure safety at home and to help you with the decisions for escalation. I will certainly make sure that this is known to the team.

I know you have reached out to Alex our patient and carer lead to let us know how you are both doing. I hope that the good care in Alton Community hospital is continuing. I know we would be happy to know how the team did there as well for you both.

I wish you both well and that recovery is almost complete.
