"Basic care is being forgotten about"

About: Aberdeen Royal Infirmary / General Surgery

(as a relative),

Today my partner was admitted to ward 208 (SAC) due to severe abdominal pain and vomiting.

Upon arrival to the ward, she was told she wasn't allowed anyone to sit with her despite the new “relaxed” approach to visiting within the hospital, this was quite distressing for her due to how unwell she is.

My partner was seen in a timely manner when arriving to the ward, however during the initial examination she fainted and vomited. Once she came round again, no observations was check and she was left to walk back into the waiting area and sit with a sick bowl. She was offered oral anti-emetics but again vomited therefore they had little chance to work. She was never offered any medication through her cannula despite having IV access and continuing to vomit.

She was asked to fast until she got her scan however due to her fainting I feel she should of been checked over, especially considering she had no fluid and diet for over 24 hours as she had been vomiting prior to admission.

Understandable she had a lengthy wait to get her CT scan but once she had her scan results were given quickly. An explanation was given for her pain and was told there was no treatment options and advised to go home, she wasn't offered any pain killers for discharge and was advised so see her local pharmacy for pain killers & anti sickness if her symptoms continued.

No follow up has been organised despite the results of her scan which is highly disappointing given the outcomes.

I find it very unprofessional and overall a lack of care and compassion that no observations were checked during the time that she fainted and that no medication was given upon discharge.

I understand and appreciate that the hospital is extremely busy and the wards are short staffed but basic care is being forgotten about.

This is the 2nd admission she has had within the last 3 months due to this ongoing issue and no further investigations have been done - this in itself is concerning due to how ill she has been each time and how little consideration is shown towards her being genuinely unwell. Instead she is expected to go home and wait for things to improve on their own.
