"Used to be great, not so now"

About: Posterngate Surgery

I have been a very happy patient of this surgery for 30 yrs and used to recommend to everyone however I have found that recently the service is not what it once was. I appreciate that Covid has had and still has an impact on delivery of services but my issue a are with approachability and interaction with reception staff. One example is of waiting in the waiting room to see a GP that was running very late ( it would help to advise patients if thhey are running late instead of saying nothing and letting us wait for 45+ minutes past our appointment time with no explanation) it was teatime and the radio was on. I'm not sure what the station was but it was wholly unsuitable for the environment and it was loud, the music and song lyrics were totally inappropriate and was certainly anxiety inducing. I approached reception- through the large plastic screens that I am advised are there to protect staff ( seriously do they still need to be in situ, they are a serious barrier to communication) and I asked the receptionist who had decided that the radio station and volume was suitable for the setting. I was completely dismissed and told " that would be the manager" . No offer to turn it down or to a different station. It might sound petty but it really really annoyed me and my son who has anxiety issues was certainly increasingly agitated by it.

Regards waiting times I fully appreciate that the doctors are very busy and their time is precious but so is mine. If I turned up 45 minutes late without an explanation then I wouldn't be seen and would have a missed visit put on my record yet we are regularly expected to just sit and wait for varying amounts of time beyond our appointments with no explanation whatsoever. It would surely be a simple matter of courtesy to be advised on arrival if your doctor is running late. I know that sometimes it may be unforeseen but again a few words wouldn't go amiss.

I am very sad to say that I am seriously considering changing surgeries, something i never thought I would want to do but I feel I have no value at Posterngate anymore.

We are sorry to read you have be disappointed with our service of late.

On occasion the surgery's do run late which is usually a combination of an unexpected patient emergency's or patients who present with complex medical needs which naturally can extend their consultation time and impact overall on appointment timings. The reception team do usually make patients aware of any delays in the surgery, we will reiterate this to the team.

Radio 2 has been played in the waiting room for many years, the volume level remains the same daily & we find this back ground music does help mask any sensitive information may be discussed in that area. There are quieter areas in the waiting room which are away from the speakers. I am sorry if the choice of music was not appropriate. The reception supervisors could have dealt with your concern about the radio at the time without the need to be flagged to the management.

The clear screens at the front desk were installed to minimise the spread of infection at the start of the Covid pandemic. As the Covid infection rates still remain high they are essential to help minimise the risk of transmission to staff, an out break among staff could jeopardise our usual service delivery.

I am sorry for the unintentional distress and frustration that this experience caused you and your son, without dates & times we are unable to investigate your concerns further.

The management team
