"We felt supported, listened to and everything was well explained"

About: Borders General Hospital / Maternity care

(as a service user),

Our baby girl was born towards the end of July at Borders General Hospital (BGH) maternity unit. From the moment we arrived on Labour Ward the staff were so welcoming and supportive.

Staff were available when we needed but also gave us space to let things progress at their own pace. At shift changeover, new staff were introduced to us and listened to our wishes. We were asked if a student nurse could assist and she was just wonderful!

We were able to use the birthing pool as requested. The midwives suggested suitable positions and helped when required. Towards the end of labour things went off plan but the midwives continued to explain what was happening at each stage and supported both myself and my husband throughout.

Once transferred to Ward 16 the staff continued to support us and throughout the night. I was supported with feeding and given opportunities to rest while the midwives cared for baby. Discharge in the morning and as a smooth process and I felt well informed.

It was great to have continuous care throughout our time on the maternity unit and we felt supported, listened to and everything was well explained.

The only negative was that siblings weren’t allowed to visit the ward. We were only in one night so not too bad but any longer would have been difficult.

Dear Redrt87

Congratulations on the birth of your daughter and thank you for providing such a lovely care opinion.

I am pleased you felt staff listened to your birth preferences and you were able to use the pool. We aim to provide person centred care and appears with your comments this was provided for you.

I can confirm that siblings are allowed to visit in ward 16 following an individual risk assessment.

If you would like to discuss this matter further please either call me on 01896 826038 or email Kirsteen.guthrie@borders.scot.nhs.uk.

I hope you are enjoying your time with your new baby daughter and thank you again for providing feedback regarding your care experience.

Kind Regards

Kirsteen Guthrie
