In the light of hearing recently that there is a problem getting a care centre bed in Shetland, I find it hard to accept that my elderly relative is denied a bed in a care home when I discover that another patient from out with Shetland has been transported to Shetland and given a bed in the care home.
Surely if someone is in hospital locally and blocking a bed so causing procedures to be cancelled for others, then that person should be offered the place as a priority?
It should not be down to the people that shout the loudest to get the bed, those elderly people who have no-one to shout for them are being disadvantaged.
When it is known that there are staff shortages due to the summer holidays surely a contingency plan not to accept patients from elsewhere could have been introduced?
Plus, the financial implications of the NHS actually transporting this person from another area by Air Ambulance instead of simply transferring someone from lerwick to the care home is mind boggling.
It really is disappointing and shows a disregard for the people of Shetland.
