"Long wait for babies at A & E"

About: University Hospital Hairmyres / Emergency Department

(as a relative),

My grandson's partner, her sister, her young daughter and my great-granddaughter were in a car crash and taken by ambulance to A & E at Hairmyres.

The adults understood the pressures on the service and the wait to be seen but by complaint is concerning the wait for the children.

After two and a half hours, my grandson's partner asked if the children would be seen soon as my great-granddaughter was upset, needing changed and hungry. She was asked if someone could bring in nappies and a bottle. At this point everyone was so upset that she stated that my grandson was taking the baby home. She was then asked to sign a waiver stating he was taking her home without being seen by a doctor.

The adults did not return home for over ten hours and I don't know what state the baby would have been in if she had been there for this length of time. Surely young babies should be prioritised as their health can change so quickly!

Fortunately the baby was fine but I do think you need to look at prioritising babies in the future.

Update posted by JanBn (a relative)

Was contacted today. The senior member of staff gave an apology and stated she will talk to staff about communicating better with parents of young babies. She also stated that she will investigate why nappies and baby food were not available as they should have been.

Hopefully this should make changes and improve the situation to other mothers and babies in the future.
