"My induction and subsequent c-section"

About: Aberdeen Maternity Hospital / Obstetrics (Maternity care)

(as the patient),

I was post dates with my baby girl. At 41+6 I had the Cook balloon put in at Dr Gray’s and went into AMH labour ward the next morning to be induced.

When we arrived, we met our first midwife Claire. Claire was amazing the entire time. She explained the process to us and listened to our wishes regarding pain relief etc. Claire kept us very calm and provided a very relaxed environment for us. She was later joined by a student (can’t remember her name) who also made us feel very comfortable.

I was put on the drip, following having my waters broken, to induce labour. I laboured all of Claire’s shift and was handed over to the care of Kyra and Aurora who stayed with us for the entirety of their shift.

My memory of what happened next isn’t very clear but from what I can remember there was not much in terms of progress of dilation and I was having back to back contractions. Epidural or c-section was discussed at this point. I declined, hoping to continue with only gas and air. After a while, it was clear things were not progressing and we may need to go for c-section. We agreed to this.

The theatre staff were great, very reassuring and caring at all times. Sadly, I cannot remember the names of any of the theatre staff.

Following the birth of our baby girl, we were cared for in recovery by Kyra and Aurora who were amazing. They provided an exceptional level of care and support to all three of us (mum, dad, baby).

Baby’s temperature was on the low side, the midwives were quick to pick up on this and called the baby doctor for support. Doctor was quickly brought in to assess and provide the treatment baby needed.

My temperature was raised and again, the midwives were quick to assess and treat.

The care we received from Claire, student, Kyra and Aurora was exceptional. My husband and I are incredibly grateful to them. For what turned out to be quite a traumatic experience was made a little easier due to the expertise and care of the ladies.

We were then transferred to Summerfield Ward for a few nights to receive care and treatment. Again, I can’t remember the name of all staff members. I do remember Jenna and student Holly who provided great care too.

Please could our wholehearted appreciation be passed on to the staff who cared for us and who helped bring our beautiful daughter into the world. A special thanks to Kyra and Aurora who were more than amazing, particularly after delivery and we will be forever grateful to.

I look after the theatre team that looks after our service users in the peri-operative environment.
