"Areas of deep concern"

About: Royal Cornwall Hospital (Treliske)

(as a service user),

We went to a & e Treliske as my husband was suffering from chest pains.

We were very worried obviously.

He was triaged quite quickly by lovely nurses and had a cannula put in as well as an x Ray and an ecg.

However we were in there for approx. 6hrs! There was absolutely no communication while we waited and waited for a dr we had no idea if his results were ok or if he was going to be taken in as he’d had a name band put on his wrist and a cannula almost straight away we thought he was!

Having waited hour after hour we saw a dr who didn’t seem to know why he was there and didn’t even know that he’d had an X-ray!

We had to go into a room with old decorating stuff in to be seen and then back in to the waiting area to wait for them to look at the X-ray which only took about 5 mins if that! Why were we kept waiting for hours and hrs when no one had even looked at his X-ray ? When we could have gone home?!

The other areas of deep concern is the waiting area and how it’s run. The police brought in someone who were drunk, under the influence of drugs, in a poor mental state or a combination of the three. People were left in the waiting room in this condition with other members of the public, many of whom were unwell and vulnerable in some way. Some patients were wandering around and swearing which was very intimidating. I saw one patient telling someont to leave her alone in no uncertain terms - at no point did any member of staff come to check on the situation. The same patient after being examined lay down across three seats, seemingly passed out.

The double doors which lead into the hospital examination rooms etc. from the waiting room, which various members of staff had accessed with a swipe card, were at one stage simply pushed wide open which makes an absolute joke of security!

Another man who had been told he could go home needed a cannula taken out. Someone who was told they could go home had their cannula taken out in full view of the waiting room, which ended with blood being dripped over them and the floor. The member of staff said they'd get someone to clear it up - which never happened! Again numerous members of staff backwards and forwards, ignoring the blood on the floor. Eventually another member of the public whose partner needed the seat got some tissues himself to wipe it up!

Finally the toilet in the dept was dirty with paper and either water or possibly urine all over the floor.

I must say in more than 60 years this is one of the worst experiences I have ever had!

Dear Rainbowsprinkles,

Thank you for taking the time to share your story with us. Although I am pleased that your husband was triaged quickly, I was saddened to read that his experience thereafter was not up to the standard we strive for. I am sorry that you waited for 6 hours in our Emergency Department with no communication as to what was happening, this must have been very stressful and frustrating for you both.

With regards to the patient that was brought into the department by the Police and subsequently remaining in the waiting room, each patient is assessed and prioritised accordingly and unfortunately, when the department becomes very busy, a cubicle may not always be available at the time. This, along with waiting times for our patients, is something that is escalated to our Trust Board when appropriate.

I have shared your story with the team in the Emergency Department so they can reflect on all aspects of your husbands experience, highlighting the lack of communication and staff support in the waiting room. I have also asked that all rooms are checked for the decorating items you have mentioned and to review the doors to make sure they are not faulty or broken in any way.

I was very concerned about the lack of cleanliness of the department after reading your feedback, please be assured that I will share this observation with the Cleaning Services team and ask them to review the area as soon as possible and to make improvements to the standards of cleanliness in the department.

If you would like to raise your concerns formally, please contact our Patient and Family Experience team (complaints) using the details below:

Telephone: 01872 252793

Thank you again for taking the time to share your husbands experience with us.

Best wishes,

Jess
