About: East Midlands Ambulance Service NHS Trust / Emergency ambulance Grantham & District Hospital / Accident and emergency Grantham & District Hospital / Respiratory medicine

(as a service user),

This would be second admission of breathing difficulties as my first resulted in being transferred from Grantham to Lincoln to stabilise my sats.

My first admission I required  tests to confirm I had suffered respiratory failure due to pulmonary embolisms. ( clots on lungs) Plus acute reaction to blood thinners. Resulting in very sore red spots covering arms and legs. Cellulitis and oedema in right leg. After two weeks I came home with medication.

Last week my breathing became extremely laboured and I took my own temperature which was 39.1 and not going down. Husband called 111 which in turn called ambulance and was taken to Grantham A&E where I was tested for covid and it came back positive.

I was taken to a isolation bay on EAU and was settled on ward within a couple of hours. I was put on oxygen to help lift my oxygen levels.

I was visited by a Dr within an hour of settling on ward where I was given an interim treatment plan.

All the staff were fantastic and put me at ease despite how scared and poorly I felt.  They all showed kindness and looked after me well. I was then seen in the morning by another Dr who discussed how my respiratory failure was acute and gave me opportunity of discussion about resuscitation.

This was a scary conversation but one I know had to be made.

I was given antibiotic for infection around lung and was also given an antiviral medication through IV.

My oxygen was slowly reduced then to zero. I was feeling so much better in 48 hrs.

I was eager to go home to finish my antibiotics as all the tests and bloods had been completed during my stay.

All the staff were very kind to me, very hardworking nurses who were very busy but gave there time for anything I needed.

Grantham hospital has always been very professionally run. I’ve been an inpatient and outpatient and have been seen in a timely manner of appointment time. Treated with dignity & respect at all times.

My sincere thanks to all that helped me through my stay, they are all very kind &  conscientious employees.

Update posted by Watercolourist (a service user)

Hi Lucy

thank you for responding to my post. Yes please do share with all the team from ambulance crew to A&E to EAU ward. I had a career within the NHS mental health side before I was medically retired, it was rare to receive written praise of any kind. However complaints always made there way to our attention straight away.

I received many thank you cards from patients, however sadly we rarely received any recognition as a team.

I feel it’s important to recognise people for giving patients kindness compassion and empathy. It’s not an easy job to maintain those everyday.

So again a big thank you to everyone.

Watercolourist
