"Life saving diagnosis for my wife"

About: Glasgow Royal Infirmary / General Medicine (Wards 3, 4, 5 &46)

(as a service user),

I wanted to pay my gratitude to an excellent doctor in A&E who treated my wife whilst she was very unwell in Glasgow Royal Infirmary.

She had already had one hospital admission in the previous 2 weeks due to vomiting, low blood pressure and weakness. She had seen and spoken to 4 GP's and one A&E consultant. Nobody actually listened to all her symptoms (skin hyperpigmentation was brushed off as nothing by the GPs) and put it all together.

Until she saw Dr Frater at Glasgow Royal. He didn't read her notes initially. Just sat and listened to her and he ordered the correct blood test to diagnose her with adrenal insufficiency. She was in an adrenal crisis and very close to severe illness/death. The other GPs and A&E doctors were just brushing it off as post viral symptoms.

Dr Frater's skills, knowledge and excellent patient care saved my wife's life. He should be commended. Thank you.

Dear PaulD22

Thank you so much for your open and honest feedback in regards to you and your wife's experience of using the A&E and General Medicine ward of the Glasgow Royal Infirmary.

I was sorry to hear your wife had to be admitted to the hospital after feeling unwell and you felt the staff didn't listen to your wife's concerns and conduct a full examination to determine a correct diagnosis. I would like to take this opportunity to apologise to you and your wife for this.

I was however, happy to hear your experience second time round was a lot better and this was mainly because of the treatment and care your wife received from Dr Frater in the A&E department.

I will be delighted to pass on your thanks to Dr Frater and the staff who I'm sure will be humbled to hear they made such a difference while your wife was under their care.

I hope you wife is feeling a lot better now and I would again like to thank you for bringing this to our attention. We always strive to improve our services so this has been very helpful and will be fed back to the relevant staff for future consultations.

Kind regards

Kevin
