"Recovering after a broken back"

About: Community Therapy Services / Nottingham West Community Therapy Lings Bar Hospital Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust - City Campus / Trauma and orthopaedics Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust - Queen's Medical Centre Campus / Trauma and orthopaedics

(as the patient),

I fell off a ladder after trying to get a box down from the loft, the box fell of my head and I fell to the floor. We had 2 ambulances sent who were brilliant, the paramedics did a great job of getting me down stairs on a stretcher as i'm a big man over 6 foot tall. I was taken to Queens but the wait times in A&E were terrible over 16 hrs I was there for.

I was eventually sent for a CT scan and was informed there was no break in my back and was sent to the ward. I was in a lot of pain for 2-3 days when I asked to speak to a doctor, they sent me for a MRI scan and found I'd actually got a spine fracture and was told it will heal by itself.

I was transferred to City Hosp and was their for 2-3 weeks and had physio and then sent to Lings bar for rehab to try and get me walking again. I was still in a lot of pain and couldn't even sit down.

Again I asked to see another doctor who decided to send me back to Queens and I was operated on within 24 hrs. They put some cement between the fracture. The following Friday I left Queens.

They asked if I would like to go back to Lings bar for more rehabilitation but if I could walk up stairs they would end me home instead. I did get up the stair and when I got home the equipment in place was amazing.

Ive been seeing Beverley the physio from West team community therapy and she has been wonderful, getting me walking again and even got me signed up to the gym.

The equipment supplied was amazing I was sent a chair for the shower, bed support, support cushions for the sofa to help relieve pressure, a walker and steps, its been great.

Thanks you so much to all.

Thank you so much for talking the time to review our Community Service. I am sorry to hear of your accident.

Our Community teams work hard to ensure that people can come home from hospital at the earliest point in their recovery. Being at home for rehabilitation can accelerate recovery and enable you to integrate back into your 'usual' life more successfully. I am pleased that this has been your experience of our community team.

Thank you for your kind words about Bev, I have spoken to her this morning and given her your feedback, she was thrilled. Bev is a very valued and experienced member of our team. She does all she can to ensure that her patients continue to thrive, we are lucky to have her.

I am thrilled you have gone from strength to strength with your recovery, please do let us know if there is anything more we can do to support you to remain independent at home. I wish you the very best in your future health... particularly that gym memebrship!
