"Abdo pain"

About: Forth Valley Royal Hospital / Accident & emergency Forth Valley Royal Hospital / Surgical Assessment Unit NHS 24 / NHS 24 (111 service)

(as the patient),

I went to A&E after talking with 111, who advised me to attend. The staff in A&E were absolutely amazing, they seen me quickly, treated me with care and compassion and I felt truly listened to and my concerns were validated.

The consultant gave me pain medication and organised a bed in surgical assessment unit for me to get a scan in the morning, as I had severe abdominal pain.

The first 2 doctors who done my admission on the ward were fantastic and took a lot of time to ease my anxiety.

The second doctor I seen prescribed me more pain medication, as I was really uncomfortable and they told me a nurse would come in to give me it.

From there it went down hill. I never received the pain medication that was prescribed, wasn’t given a blanket or gown when I came in with nothing but my phone charger, and when I called for the nurse to address these 2 issues nobody came in for the whole night.

After my scan, the consultant came in and told me I was fine to go home, but I wasn’t told what was wrong or what to do to help, so I left feeling uncertain and more unsure of hospitals than I went in.

Dear E.student

I'm sorry to learn, following a call to 111, you had to attend A&E, however I'm pleased to hear the staff there were amazing. I'm sorry to read that your experience wasn't as positive later and I'm sure my colleagues within NHS FV will be keen to explore this further.

I respond in relation to your contact with 111. It seems that we recognised the severity of your symptoms, hence the advice to attend at A&E. If you care to share any more detail about your call to 111, then I would be delighted to hear from you. You can call me on 07814 299944 or by email at Patient.Experience@nhs24.scot.nhs.uk

I hope you are back to full health soon.

Take care meantime.

Shona
