"Waiting times"

About: Royal Victoria Hospital / Accident & Emergency

(as a relative),

Took my dad to ED today as he couldn’t move his left shoulder and a tingling and burning sensations down his left arm (previous history of heart attacks) and was moved relatively quickly to zone B (wasn’t his heart thankfully) but waited almost 5 hours for blood results and almost 3 hours for pain relief. You could tell quite clearly he was in a lot of pain as he couldn’t sit still for more than 30 seconds. Doctor kept saying his blood results wouldn’t be long but in my opinion if you don’t know how long they are going to take don’t give false hope and say that. They had to give him stronger pain relief twice as he was in that much pain and the first dose didn’t do anything. Unfortunately we had no choice but to come here as our own GP closes at 12pm on a Wednesday and they would have just sent him here anyway

Dear heronwz49,

My name is Linsey Sheerin, I am the Service Manager for Urgent and Emergency Care in Belfast Trust. Thank you for taking the time to share your experience on Care Opinion, I will ensure that your comments are feedback to all staff. I am saddened to read of the delays your father experienced while in our care.

Recognition and alleviation of pain should be a priority when treating the ill and injured. This process should start at triage, be monitored during a patient's time in the ED and continue through to admission or discharge ensuring adequate analgesia is provided at all times, including beyond discharge where appropriate. I am sincerely sorry that this was not the case with your father.

As a service we will continue to monitor the timeliness of bloods results becoming available, to help prevent the delays like your father experienced.

I hope that your father is well and making good progress in his recovery.

Linsey
