"My total knee replacement"

About: Victoria Hospital / Trauma & orthopaedics

(as the patient),

I was admitted to Ward 10, Victoria Hospital recently for elective surgery on my right knee. The operation took place that afternoon. The treatment I received consequently was great. The nurses were so helpful and nothing, however trivial, was too much trouble to them.

Since getting back on my feet was pivotal, the physios were there the next morning getting me mobile, first with a Zimmer frame and then with elbow crutches. Needless to say, I was scared of falling but the staff chivvied me on saying, "You can do it." Tricks to get mobile were passed on and my best friend is now a length of crepe bandage!

My pain medication was well regulated and I was given more as I required it.

I cannot fault the care I was given up to my discharge. Any hiccups that there were, principally getting my discharge medication from the pharmacy, were not of their making.

The food was good and overall I have no negative points to make.

Dear Nether23,

Thank you very much for taking the time to post your kind feedback. I am pleased to hear that your treatment was great and that you were well looked after by the nursing team.

As a team, we are glad you developed the confidence to use your walking aids without fear of falling. The crepe bandage is a great trick for getting in and out of bed so please continue to use it until you manage to bring your leg in and out by yourself.

I am sorry that you had a wait from pharmacy for your medications, they do have a turn around up to 4 hours and I can only apologise for your wait.

I will share your feedback with all staff involved. We wish you the very best in your ongoing recovery.

Aileen and the Ward 10 Team.

Good afternoon nether23,

It was lovely to hear that the treatment you received in ward 10 and that the staff involved in your care were very helpful.

Early mobilisation is pivotal in the recovery process and with the teams encouragement and helpful tips you were once again mobile!!! To help with any pain or discomfort you may have been experiencing post operatively we actively encourage that you use the pain relief precribed and you did just that!!

Apologies for the prolonged period of time waiting on your medications.

I will ensure that the team are aware of you comments, and we wish you well in your continued recovery.

SCN Lorna Bellingham

Dear nether23,

I am sorry to hear there was a delay in you receiving your discharge medicines from pharmacy.

While the national measure for discharge medicines is 4 hours, my team is currently striving to achieve a 2-hour discharge turnaround time in NHS Fife and are starting to see a great deal of improvement in achieving this working with our clinical pharmacy team.

There are a number of reasons why discharge medicines can be delayed and we always try to resolve any issues as quickly and safely as possible. If you would like us to investigate your discharge, then we would be happy to do so, please contact me (claire.steele@nhs.scot) to discuss.

Thank you for your feedback and I wish you a speedy recovery.

Kind regards,

Claire
