"I was very concerned"

About: Daisy Hill Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a parent/guardian),

My son was involved in a head on severe car crash . The car was a write-off. Police attended scene and off duty paramedic, both very helpful. After half an hour and ambulance not dispatched, my son was told to go in car with wife. When he attended staff were shown photo of car he had just been taken out of, but seemed disinterested. He was put on chair to wait in waiting room. After half an hour he felt very unwell, colour pale, chest really sore and complained of more chest pain. I approached desk and told reception this, I advised I was nurse and very concerned that he may have had internal injuries. I was told he would have to wait his turn. I asked could he have a bed they repeated wait his turn. 4 patients later he was called. The nurse tried to take his blood pressure over his coat, had to ask them to take it off and do it properly to get a reading

As a healthcare professional I found this not acceptable. As a mum I thought I was going to lose my son. Something needs to be put in place to prevent this happening to someone who might not be as lucky as my son to come through something like this.

We apologise that your son was in a lot of discomfort and had to wait. Patients are triaged accordingly using Manchester Triage system and unfortunately other patients take priority over others. We will pass on your comments as we aim to ensure quality of care for all patients. we apologise for your anguish as we also aim to ensure patients and their relatives are kept up to date and made to feel reassured. We hope your son is recovering well.

Update posted by danceyr55 (a parent/guardian)

My son is an individual and should have been triaged on his injuries and how he looked as a nurse he needed emergency help at that moment over other patients. The triage system is only a guide, not all patients are the same. As a nurse we are taught to observe someone and treat each person as an individual, all with different needs. Also your manner of non-caring and the way we were spoken to was not hospital policy. No thanks to you my son lived but is still struggling with his injuries. We were never kept up to date or reassured at any time.
