"Lack of privacy in the emergency department"

About: Russells Hall Hospital / Accident and emergency

(as a service user),

Due to severe pain I had to visit Dudley Group NHS Foundation Trust's Emergency Department yesterday

I would suggest that those which signed off on the redesign of this department speak with their doctor for a Neuro referral. The streaming desk, which is less than 2 metres away from patients waiting to see an Urgent Care Doctor, is where the first and biggest problem lies. There is absolutely zero privacy here. I went in with what I'd say is a delicate complaint, and to have to announce that to a waiting room of people I find frankly amoral.

I understand that COVID rules have changed, although I am unclear of the changes in healthcare settings. There was zero space between patients. In fact, whilst I was there a patient indicated to the streaming nurse that they were COVID positive, to which they gave her a form and put two small office partition walls around her. She then had to queue with other patients, without a mask, to hand her form back in.

There was also a patient who attended following a GP consultation who had advised her to get an ambulance for a suspected heart attack. The streaming nurse bizarrely gave the patient a form to fill out with her details, which she struggled doing hugely, before directed her around the corner to wait in the A&E reception.

I was aware of every single persons complaint as they entered the waiting room.  I don't believe they have a scooby-doo in that department, and sadly many other departments which I've recently, and frequently had to visit with a family member.

Thank you for taking the time to tell us about your experience of the Dudley Urgent Care Centre. Although the centre is located within Russells Hall Hospital, the service is provided by a company called Malling Health.

We have passed your feedback onto them. However, if you would like to get in touch with them directly, please contact Lola Ramon by email lola.ramon@malling.health
