"Poor understanding of Alzheimer's"

About: Newsome Surgery

My mother who has Alzheimers attended the surgery with her friend to support her and was asked to sign in. She tried to explain that she can't sign her name any more but the receptionist kept telling her she had to and it has left her very upset at how she was treated. I know receptionists have a lot to deal with but I would have thought there should be some level of training around conditions such as dementia and how these patients are treated. From my mum's perspective she was being asked to do something she finds impossible - possibly had difficulty explaining this - but I understand the receptionist was made aware she has Alzheimer's by her friend but carried on treated her as if she had the mental capacity and ability as a patient who doesn't suffer from this condition. She is embarrassed by the condition anyway and this has just left her feeling very upset. Please can you ensure your staff are trained and capable of dealing with this type of situation. I can provide the name of the receptionist if this can be followed up.

I am sorry to read the above feedback but thank you for your comments.

I had only just started at this point but now I am settled in post, if you have any further issues please do ask to speak to the Practice Manager so I can look into this for you.
