"Covid restrictions still in place in Emergency Department"

About: Ninewells Hospital / Accident & Emergency

(as a service user),

Was shocked that the Emergency Department is still not letting relatives come into the department with sick patients under the guise of COVID. When everyone else can go into hospitals and schools and other ED departments in the country, Ninewells appears to be the only place where sick patients have to wait by themselves!

There is not need for this anymore and as far as Scottish Government guidelines go, should not be happening.  This should change now!

Dear JK1cc47

Thank-you for taking the time to comment on the Current visiting restrictions in the Emergency Department, Ninewells Hospital. I understand your concerns raised.

Our visiting policy in the ED is currently undergoing a review and further risk assessment. We have to be mindful that the ED is different to other 'inpatient' areas due to the limited capacity and unselected presentations. This does not allow relatives/visitors to facilitate in taking a recommended LFD test prior to arrival. Our other main issue is that surges in patient activity and attendances in the ED create a risk of crowding in our waiting area which is still a recognised risk in the guidelines. For those patients that do not require additional support we do still request that the relatives/carer wait outwith the ED to help reduce the crowding. We do allow a patients relative/carer to be with the patient if it is required in situations that require support and are always happy to discuss this on an individual patient centred basis.

regards

Dr Andrew J Kinnon
