"Comfortable and reassured"

About: Community Child Health / Health Visiting Service

(as the patient),

Aine has been my health visitor since my son was born in August 2021.

When I saw Aine I was trying to power through breastfeeding I was in an awful lot of pain, very very deep cracks on each side, bleeding with every feed and had been upset that I might have to stop when it was very important to me that I be able to feed my son for a year at least.

I’d looked up breastfeeding support but there really wasn’t any I found useful, there wasn’t any one on one support that you didn’t have to pay for and any support I did get I was basically told that it’s going to hurt to just keep going.

When I saw Aine I didn’t even go into a lot of detail with the pain I was in but she could tell just my watching me feed that I was in a lot of pain. She asked if she could help with my latch and within 10 seconds got my son to latch….painlessly! I couldn’t believe it.

My son is now 10 months and I’m still breastfeeding all thanks to Aine. I’m not an expressive person when it comes to having difficulty or being in pain but Aine just knew by observing and was so gentle in her approach that I was immediately comfortable.

She is really fantastic and genuinely approachable in all aspects. I always felt comfortable and reassured after her visits and looked forward to seeing her.

Hello Hanbe67, I've read your story and it seams like you have came through a lot to get to where you are with breastfeeding today, you have done an amazing job to keep going! It is also really lovely to hear how supportive Aine has been for you throughout your breastfeeding challenges and beyond. I understand there has been limited face to face bf support available in the community during Covid 19, therefore the role of your HV has been invaluable. We also have a Specialist Breastfeeding Support Service in BHSCT for mums who are having breastfeeding challenges, which is accessed via referral from your Midwife, Health Visitor, Peer Support, Surestart or GP, so this is something to be aware of if you require additional support in the future. On a positive note we are delighted to be re-commencing two Breastfeeding Support Groups face to face as of next week and you are very welcome to join us. If you would like more information you can contact Aine or myself on 07752140133. Thank you for taking the time to provide such positive feedback. Naomie Farrell, Infant Feeding Lead.
