Within minutes of arriving for my appointment I was taken into the department and had all my details checked. Subsequently I was prepared for the procedure and after a short period was wheeled into the procedure room.
I was able to see every part of the colonoscopy on the colour screens around me. I did not have sedation and only had a couple of instances of discomfort otherwise I was very comfortable. A really small polyp was removed using a cold snare.
The procedure was fascinating. It was like a real time virtual experience with the audio provided by the endoscopist and the male nurse assistant. Additionally it was explained where the camera was at each stage by the nurse pointing it out on a plastic model.
The endoscopist was brilliant (real smooth operator). It only took 20-30 minutes. Six years ago I had had the same procedure but was not as aware as I was today. Sounds crazy but the whole procedure was brilliant and another real life experience.
Afterwards I was monitored for a short period whilst the consultant put together his report. I was given tea and biscuits then finally debriefed on my results.
I felt elated at the end and reflected on the professional care and attention I was given by all the staff that looked after me. They really are the best . Many thanks to you all.
