My husband was booked in for brain surgery in 3 days time. We found out today that his surgery has been postponed for 4 weeks. No explanation given by the hospital. We found out about the cancellation not from the RVI but from County Durham Trust who were due to do his PCR test tomorrow! They told us the PCR was cancelled. This hospital has no idea of the ramifications of cancelling surgery at such short I cancelled my spinal surgery which was scheduled for the day after my husband's brain surgery so I could look after him. The result is that neither of us is having our respective surgeries. My mother who has Alzheimer's and is in a care home hasn't had a visit for 2 weeks because we have been self isolating to reduce our risk of contracting covid. I could have been visiting her. We have sat in the house like hermits for 2 weeks. My husband surrendered his driving licence when he had a date for surgery so we have no means of transport. Postponing his surgery by 4 weeks means his 6 moths of no driving is extended by 4 weeks. What is to say his surgery will go ahead in 4 weeks time? Do we have to live like hermits for another 4 weeks in case we catch covid? I think this department has a serious problem with communicating with their patients. They clearly have no concern for the mental health of their patients. This is after all brain surgery! Hospitals should be forced to say why surgery has been cancelled. When WE phoned the RVI to confirm what Durham had told us we were simply told the consultant had to 'rearrange'their list. Why have they had to 'rearrange their lists' for 4 weeks? Illness? Holiday? Most institutions can't do this. Imagine a school rearranging when it opens! What a way to run a Trust!
